Certified Childbirth Educator (CCE) Program
Course Description
Becoming a childbirth educator is an extremely rewarding career for those who desire to educate pregnant women about birth processes and their choices. This is a great career for those who would like to work in the evening or weekends and earn part-time income. Childbirth Educators are responsible for providing evidence based information and teaching in a non-biased manner.
Course Outcomes
This course will prepare the student to be able to create and teach a childbirth education class.
Focus will be on curriculum development and teaching strategies. Our Partner Commonsense Childbirth Institute will issue student’s final lifetime Certification ($50 fee) when requirements are met.
Course Objectives
To train students:
- to understand The JJ Way® Method.
- to impart evidence-based information to families and prepare them for pregnancy, labor and birth, and postpartum.
- to work professionally in a variety of settings, including private practice, hospitals, birth centers, and public-health clinics.
- to understand the scope of practice – Childbirth Educators are educators, not clinicians, therefore Commonsense Childbirth Institute ensures students have an understanding of appropriate referrals within their community.
Course Outline
- Explain the importance of evidence-based teaching to today’s expectant parents.
- Identify the role of the childbirth educator to the expectant families, the professional community and the lay community as a whole.
- Define the types of learners, their needs and the factors affecting learners’ ability to retain information ~ include preferred methods of learning for today’s expectant parents.
- Explain the Group Process and how childbirth educators can successfully apply it to their classes.
- List applicable teaching strategies with generational differences for childbirth classes.
- Identify strategies for teaching nutritional needs of the pregnant woman
- Explain methods for teaching proper body mechanics and exercise for the pregnant woman.
- Discuss the signs of pre-labor and warnings signs of pregnancy, the stages and phases of labor.
- Explore the Gate Control Theory and the Fear-Tension-Pain Cycle and their impact on teaching.
- List various comfort measures for labor and birth and describe their benefit.
- Define techniques for breathing through labor and why they may be beneficial.
- Explain the benefits of social support for the expectant family.
- Describe basic teaching techniques with respect to the various classes and audiences.
- Explain the causes of pain in childbirth and the how pain is viewed by expectant parents and the healthcare team.
- Identify personal biases and create a risk-benefit teaching approach.
- Identify verbal/non-verbal triggers, personal biases and their impact on creating a risk-benefit teaching approach.
Certification Requirements
Certification shall be granted to those who choose to complete the requirements below, following the 20 hour training program:
- Provide proof of high school diploma or GED
- Complete the required reading list
- Non-pregnant participation in a childbirth preparation class.
- Breastfeeding Classes.
- Develop a Childbirth Education curriculum
- Co-teach or teach a series with an experienced childbirth educator’s evaluation
- Observe 5 Births
- Two letters of recommendation from birth professionals.
Fast Track Certification
For students with previous training (certificate of attendance) or other childbirth educator certifications seeking certification through CCI, we offer a fast track program for $210 (plus additional $45 platform access fee). This program requires the following for certification:
- Successful completion of our online course and written exam
- Develop/Documentation of Childbirth Education curriculum
- 30 hours of Internship including a minimum of 5 Births and 8 hours of teaching childbirth education class
- Two letters of recommendation from birth professionals

Prerequisites
High school diploma, GED or certificate from an institute of higher education
Certified Childbirth Educator (CCE) Program
- Total Course Fee $ 485.00 Payment via Paypal only. Fellowship Program ($210) is available to those with previous training, but seeking certification with CCI. Prerequisites required for this Fellowship fee. You must have prior formal training with a Certificate of Completion. Prior approval is required.
- Cancelation Policy: Cancelation at any time after first payment is subject to a $25 administration fee. Cancelation 30 days prior to start date of course will be issued full refund less $55.00 administration fee, 15 days prior subject to 50% refund, NO refunds are given with in 7 days of course, but student may reschedule same course with in 12 months.
Training Dates
Generally the Certified Doula Training Program is offered virtually with a live instructor & On Demand. We will evaluate as time goes when to add face to face in-person in Central Florida.
- Virtual/Online are generally evenings from 7:00-9:30pm EST
- Traditional Face to Face Courses: Sat & Sun 8:30-5:30pm
- On-Demand means you work through the course on your time and as fast as you need to. email [email protected]
