Doula Care

My partner/husband is not sure we need a doula, won't he be supportive?

This is a very common thought, but in truth a study out of Canada many years ago showed that only 20% of men can actually remember what they should be doing to support mom when birth gets intense. That means that 80% end up “observing” the birth. A Childbirth Consultant or doula is trained to support BOTH mom and dad.

How are wedding planners and doulas similar?

Do doctors and nurses work well with doulas?

Childbirth Concierge has forged great relationship with providers and firmly believes it comes down to how the doula handles herself while working. When mutual respect and great people skills are in action, it makes for a great team. Not every provider feels that a doula is necessary, but Childbirth Concierge strives to help you work effectively with your provider.

How do I go about hiring a doula?

It is important for you to feel comfortable with your doula, after all she will be experiencing your miracle of birth beside you. Childbirth Concierge has a very high standard of those who provide doula services. We guarantee the utmost professionalism, non -judgmental interactions..after all it is YOUR birth. We would love to speak to you via cell, set up a Skype session and to get to know your needs as well as allow you to ask us questions. Once you decide to allow us to work with you and deliver your peace of mind we move to the administrative part. We will email our contract for your review. and once we receive it back Childbirth Concierge will send you a PayPal invoice for the retainer, or you can mail it. From that point you are set to go and begin prenatal meetings with your doula.

Breastfeeding

How do I tell when I need breastfeeding help?

First and foremost breastfeeding is NOT supposed to be painful or be so stressful that bottle feeding becomes a real possibility. Getting help right away is extremely helpful in turning the breastfeeding experience around. If you are negatively anticipating your baby’s next feeding, or baby does not have enough output in diapers, we encourage you to get help. If your not sure give us a call, we often can help right over the phone.

What are your favorite breastfeeding resources?

My favorite evidence based website is http://www.kellymom.com There all kinds of facebook groups that you can become involved with that give great support as well.

Are breastfeeding professionals all the same?

No there are different levels of education and experience required for certification.
Lactation Educators have about 24 hrs of instruction
Certified Lactation Counselors have 48 hours
Board Certified Lactation Consultants have the highest level of expertise on a world wide level.
Having said that, some who has spent years working with breastfeeding mothers can be very knowledgeable, regardless of type of certification.

Education/Classes

Are childbirth classes really necessary?

No, babies have been born since the beginning of time with out their moms going to class, but what IS different is the culture we live in today. There is a lot of information virtually available, but words on a screen or video just aren’t the same as sitting in front of an expert in Childbirth. Childbirth Concierge offers private classes or Skype sessions for those with unique schedules, and of course we always recommend a “doula” especially if you can’t get to class!

Do I take a Childbirth Class if I am planning on an epidural?

The most common benefits of a good childbirth class is learning about comfort measures and relaxation. These are great skills even if you do get an epidural. Most hospitals won’t even admit you to labor and delivery until active labor around 4cm, so it great to know how to tell your in labor and strategies for coping until you can get the epidural. Also a childbirth class should cover so much more to help you be prepared.

Postpartum Care

Baby Nurse or Postpartum Doula?

Actually the names often get used interchangeably, but common to hear the use of “baby nurse” up north. Our Postpartum doulas are not necessarily registered nurses, and are not required to be a nurse to provide non-medical care to you and your baby. Since the beginning of time women supported women in the childbearing year. In today’s society we are often away from family and could benefit from some one on one care.

I just feel over whelmed how can you help?

As mother’s ourselves we certainly understand being over whelmed. In fact we have been known to pour you a cup of tea and give you permission to have a good cry, it releases endorphins. Sometimes it is just having some one in your home who can be an ear to listen, give you tips, or just hold your baby while you take a shower. For others they are looking for some one to be with the baby at night so they can get as much sleep as possible. Regardless we can help you feel more confident to parent your wee one.
